Day 069

Start: 6:41am
Weather: Cold and Clear
Time/Distance/Pace: 57:28 - 5.5 miles - 10:27
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/64350208

Thoughts: I didn't run a particularly good pace but I got the miles in, that has been my overall goal after all. It's hard to exercise during the holidays and I've been missing my non-running exercises as well. I'm just glad I haven't missed a run like over Thanksgiving break. I need to start getting serious about my weight in the new year so that I'm down to a good weight for the marathon.

Weather: Cold and Clear
Time/Distance/Pace: 24:59 - 2.51 miles - 9:58
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/64122595

Thoughts: I got home at around 12:30am from a Clutch concert and had a hard time falling asleep. I figured I'd have a crappy morning and a terrible run, but it wasn't so bad. This morning was about as cold as I can take it without putting on thicker gloves and a full winter hood. It was 22 degrees and breezy. As I descended the New Hill with the eastern sky at my disposal, I caught a shooting star rocketing toward the horizon. That is always awe inspiring to me.

Weather: Cold and Clear
Time/Distance/Pace: 29:32 - 3 miles - 9:51
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/63952755

Thoughts: The roads were covered with compacted snow and ice which caused some slippage and ginger running conditions, but the weather was pretty mild. I kept a decent pace after a slower than average first mile. I made sure to ice fairly well after the run as my left knee has been throbbing lately.

Weather: Cold and Clear
Time/Distance/Pace: 24:54 - 2.51 miles - 9:56
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/63842633

Thoughts: There was about an inch of snow on the road, not quite enough for it to be my first run with STABILicers. I figured the roads would be clear of snow, but for the most part they were not. My feet slipped quite a bit which always kills my back for some reason. For the most part it was an okay run.

Weather: Cold and Clear
Time/Distance/Pace: 28:11 - 3 miles - 9:24
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/63676329

Thoughts:  This Christmas Eve run took place in Weymouth, Massachusetts. I guessed at a loop that turned out to be almost exactly 3 miles. I found this run to be more exhaustive than running on the island. I think it was a combination of higher pollution, stepping up and off curbs and having to stop at crosswalks and wait for cars. I still kept a good pace though and it was a much needed run on a vacation weekend full of eating good food.

Day 060

Start: 5:19am
Weather: Cold, Icy and Clear
Time/Distance/Pace: 24:06 - 2.5 miles - 9:38
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/63495853

Thoughts:  I haven't felt very energetic this week so I wasn't looking forward to this run as much as I typically do. But, once I got going I felt pretty good and kept a nice pace. The street was covered with black ice so there was a bit of slippage. A sliver of moon was rising as I got to the east end, and it was one of those mornings that was so dark that that dark side of the moon was visible. It was quite the visual treat.

I adjusted my training calendar today. I read an article that said one of the mistakes that people make when training for a marathon is not leaving ample amount of time for recovery between their big run and marathon day. Hal Higdon's training guide leaves 3 weeks between the big run week and the marathon. This article suggested 4 weeks with a mileage of 32, 24, 16 an 8 miles. So, I removed the final week of "Spring Training" (which is a clone of the first week of "Novice 1" anyway), shifted all my weeks up to gain a week after my long run, and then adjusted the miles so they taper as suggested.

Time/Distance/Pace: 32:50 - 3 miles - 10:56
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/63336954

Thoughts:  I awoke with a sharp pain on the inside of my left knee. So, this morning I was concerned about hurting it more during my run and kept my pace real easy. I'd much rather get the miles in and run consistently than worry about having a good pace and possibly put myself out of commission. I'm not even to the real training yet, so I'd hate to hurt myself now.

Thoughts:  I forgot to turn on my alarm the evening before and woke up at the time I normally return from my run. So, I had to run when I got home in the evening. I felt very light on my feet and kept a comparably fast pace. About two miles in I had to remind myself that I would be running again in less than 10 hours and slowed my pace.

Weather: Cold and Snowy
Time/Distance/Pace: 50:05 - 5 miles - 10:01
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/63085999

Thoughts:  I did pretty well considering that I was out drinking last night. I was pretty excited for this run as it was the first 5 miler. Once again I did a kettlebell workout on Friday, so my hamstrings were tight. But, I felt much better than last week when I was hobbling around. About a mile and a half into the run it began to lightly snow, which was nice. During the entire run I did not see a single person or vehicle, which was also nice.

Time/Distance/Pace: 19:21 - 2 miles - 9:40
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/62936448

Thoughts:  A decent run. I tried to determine which way the wind was blowing prior to my run so I could stay out of it. Unfortunately I chose wrong and had the wind in my face for the first half of the run. But, that meant I had it to my back the second half. My legs feel about 90% from last week's Friday workout. I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to do the same workout tomorrow.

Time/Distance/Pace: 29:47 - 3 miles - 9:56
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/62765387

Thoughts:  A much better run. My legs were a little sore to begin, but after the first mile they loosened up. Strangely enough, I saw two people while running this morning. It has gotten to the point where I don't typically see vehicles, let alone people. I'm looking forward to being able to walk again, hopefully I didn't push more sore legs too much this morning.

RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/62677812

Thoughts:  As my pace suggests, it was another difficult run. My legs were still very sore from my kettlebell workout on Friday. I was hoping that I would have recovered by now, and now I hope that continuing to run doesn't make things worse.

Weather: Cold and Clear
Time/Distance/Pace: 31:37 - 3 miles - 10:32
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/62491900

Thoughts:  Typically on non-run days, Wednesdays and Fridays, I do an upper body strength workout to give my legs a break. Yesterday I was stupid enough to change things up and do a kettlebell workout. In doing so I used my legs in ways I'm not used to and spent the rest of the day hobbling around in pain. As a result my first mile this morning was utter hell, and the remaining two were not much better. But, if there are muscles I'm not working while doing all this running, then I'm probably compensating for them with my joints. So, I'm better off finding ways to work them.

Thoughts:  Awful weather this morning, I loved it. It started off as rain and switched over to snow shortly after. As giant snowflake clusters pelted me in the face I couldn't help but laugh out loud. Running through the winter will make running in May that much easier.

RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/62156526

Thoughts:  A very good run. I'm really starting to like Tuesday's run. I thought it would be the most difficult day because it's the only run of the week that doesn't have a non-run day before it and it isn't a short run. Instead I have felt my best on Tuesdays. It was another mild morning; nearly 50 degrees. During the run I started thinking that when I complete this marathon I should next train for the Maine Marathon and try to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Getting a little ahead of myself, but it's nice to have some of my running confidence back.

Time/Distance/Pace: 18:51 - 2 miles - 9:25
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/62061987

Thoughts:  It's hard to believe that the mornings are so mild still. I anticipated to be running with my STABILicers at this point. I won't complain. I think my biggest issue right now (besides my eating) is patience. Since I am still in the "Spring season" stage of my training I don't feel like my miles are increasing, so it is hard to see that I am accomplishing anything. My weekly miles are still low, but I think this is a good thing. My knees aren't bothering me anymore and I imagine that they are strengthening, which will help me push beyond my previous wall of 24 miles per week. When that week comes.

RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/61860586

Thoughts:  One of the colder runs of the year so far, so of course I struggled with my breathing. I even considered slowing to a walk after the New Hill, but pushed on. Mostly I thought about my weight. When I'm exercising 4-5 days a week and eating well my weight stays at about 195 pounds. I'm fairly frustrated that I'm currently having a hard time getting my weight below 200 pounds considering all the running I'm doing. I don't think I have a chance of completing the marathon without getting my weight to 185 or lower. I know I have plenty of time, but if I want to keep my weight loss healthy by losing 1 pound per week, I have 23 pounds to lose with 24 weeks to go.

Thoughts:  As much as my head was like "Gogogo!" my body was like "slow...slow...slow..." My legs were leaden, my energy nil and my breathing labored. I believe it's because I'm slacking on my diet. It's funny because when I eat right (2200 calories or less) I feel great, I sleep well, I have lots of energy, I'm happy. When I overeat all of that changes. Why then do I overeat? I guess that's most of our problems. On the up side, my knees and hips feel fine!

Thoughts: I had a decent run. It started out a bit sore but I picked up my pace the last half a mile or so. My body is still paying me back for slacking off over the holiday weekend. Even though my runs haven't been great, I'm actually looking forward to running again. I kind of wish that tomorrow wasn't a day off. Let's see how I feel in a month or two when the weekly distance starts getting up there.

Thoughts: I feel bad because I missed two runs over the Thanksgiving holiday. I brought my running stuff down to Boston with me and even got dressed for a run, but still failed to get out the door. Hal Higon says it's okay to miss a run once in a while, but never miss a long run (Saturday). Luckily, at this point my long runs aren't any longer than my other runs. Now I have to make sure I don't repeat that failure.

I was pretty sore from excessive dancing Saturday night and I didn't eat very well over the holiday break. So, my pace was slow, but otherwise the run went fine.

Thoughts: The first half-mile of today's run was probably the most effortless I've had so far. I felt as light on my feet as deer having learned that hunting season was cut short. It made me remember when I was marathon training in 2004 and up over 20 miles a week, those first three miles of a run felt like nothing. After that the cold kicked it, it was in the 20s, and labored breathing slowed my pace. But, for a few minutes I remembered why I love to run.

Thoughts: Probably my hardest run so far. Yesterday and this morning I had a sore right hamstring and it definitely affected my pace. On top of that the cold and wind had my lungs sounding like a early summer bog full of peepers. Here's hoping that tomorrow's 3 miler goes better.

Thoughts: The morning was cool and very windy, but there was a nice sunrise that made the morning worth it. The combination of cold and wind always affect my breathing and therefor my pace, but I was able to bring what was a 10 minute pace after the first mile down to a decent 9:46 pace. Hunting season is in full effect, I heard four gunshots during my run. Not the most settling sound to hear while you're out running.

Thoughts: Woke up feeling like I had run a 10k yesterday. I spent the day volunteering for Portland Trails to blaze and harden parts of the Sebago to the Sea Trail (from the information kiosk to the Presumpscot River), which basically entailed pushing a wheelbarrow loaded with soil a quarter of a mile through the forest and bog. It definitely affected my pace, but I still felt good once I started running. I've gotten to the point where it feels more natural to run than walk. It only lasts for the first few miles at this point, but I still love that feeling.

Thoughts: Woke up very sore from doing a core workout yesterday and was worried how it would affect my run. But once I hit the street I felt fine, better than fine actually. For the third time this month it was over 50 degrees out at 5am. Either from the core workout or from my balance workouts my running felt real sturdy and efficient. If I always feel that good, I will continue to work my core and support muscles. I'm thinking about adding stretching or yoga on Sunday to limber up. If I'm really going to do this I might as well go all out and get serious.

Thoughts: Ah, a different distance. It's not all that different; it's not like it's a longer distance. But, a new distance freshens things up. First of all, it means a different route. Living on an island has a whole bunch of benefits, diverse running routes is not one of them. I swear I have exhausted every possible way to run 1.5 miles and end up close to my house. A two mile run means that I can extend those there-and-back routes by a quarter mile. Secondly, it means that I am making progress; getting closer to my goal.

Considering that my left knee and my left hip hurt, and I always run on the left side of the road, I decided to run on the right side to see if that would relieve any pain. I also did Ab Ripper X and some balancing on one foot to try to strengthen muscles around my problem joints. I did feel better today than I have in the past, but Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning is when I'm typically most sore.

Thoughts: One male mallard duck, two seagulls, one dog, one crow and two vehicles. That is all that I saw during my morning run around the island. It was clear and sunny and quiet. Again my left knee and hip bothered me before and after my run. I think it may be my iliobial-band. From a little bit of reading it sounds like the soreness comes from poor alignment caused by weak hips and weak feet (apparently knee issues are rarely caused by the knee, but from weakness surrounding the knee). For this and my runner's knee I'm going to try adding balancing on one foot, one-leg step-ups, one-legged squats, low-box step-ups and some core exercises. I will most likely do these on days that I do short runs. Hopefully the pain will go down as I strengthen my body.

Thoughts: I was behind schedule this morning so I only got a quick stretch in before heading out to run. Luckily it was only 1.5 mile run. Thoughts: I almost labeled this run as "Warm." It was fifty degrees out and felt almost like a cool summer evening. Along the front side of the island I ran through warm pockets in the air that I associate with summer nights. Even the beavers were out, startling the crap out of me as I ran by (five slaps of its tail, usually it only gets off two or three before I am out of sight). I felt great this morning despite waking up several times during the night with a leg ache (more specifically the back of my left knee including hamstring and upper calf). I found my groove early and kept my pace pretty consistent. I'm thinking it was either the warm weather or the fact that I drank so much water and didn't over eat yesterday. Either way, I woke up ready to roll.

Thoughts: Two weeks down, twenty-eight to go. Overall I have felt fine. My left knees ache at times but not enough to concern me. My weight is dropping and at this time is low enough for the 10 miles per week. I plan on being in the low 190s when I get to 20+ miles a week and around 180 for the marathon. I'm using Livestrong's My Plate to track my calories and exercise. It's free to use and once you input your average activity level, weight and how you want to manage your weight (lose 2 pounds per week, 1 pound per week, or maintain weight) it gives you a calorie goal for the day (it also tracks fat, sodium, protein, carbohydrates, etc). I've been doing 1 pound per week and have pretty much been losing that.

Thoughts: As I hit the road I had Conditions of My Parole stuck in my head, and it stayed with me for pretty much the entire run. My calf muscles were tight when I woke up, so I was afraid they would bother me, but once I got going they were fine. I noticed that my pace seems to be at the 9:15 mark now, where I was typically running a 10 minute miles before I began training. That is progress for me, because I am not worrying about my pace at all. I'm only concerned about not missing a run.

Thoughts: Upon leaving the house this morning I was welcomed by the sound of surge on the back shore of the island. I find the sound powerful and grounding. A reminder of the power of nature around me, not to mention the fact that I live on an island (which is hard to remember this time of year when you never see it in daylight). Setting off I tried to come up with a new way to run 1.5 miles. My favorite 1.5 mile run is through the conservation area, but with hunting season in full swing I avoid those 80 acres of the island. I wanted to tackle the New Hill again, for some reason I like running up it, but opt to loop around my neighborhood instead. Overall I felt pretty good and I kept the pace rather slow. I plan on using the Thursday run as a recovery run from the Monday/Tuesday runs and in preparation of the long Saturday run.

I was a little concerned that it would be a pain this winter, but I managed well enough. It will be a hassle if my shoe comes untied (just my right shoe, for some reason it always comes untied) but otherwise it won't be a big deal. My left knee throbbed all night long, but once I got moving this morning it felt fine. For some reason my gait felt all over the place though. Honestly, I mostly thought about NaNoWriMo starting today and how I'm going to get my hours of writing in on top of training for a marathon.

Day 008

Start: 5:24am
Weather: Cold and Clear
Time/Distance/Pace: 0:14:00 - 1.5 miles - 9:20

Thoughts: As if to try my will to train, mother nature threw a sub-freezing day my way. Lucky me, I got to label my first "Cold" post. I decided that for me, below freezing is considered "Cold." Despite my better sense I left the house without hat and gloves. Because of the temperature my breathing was tight, but other than that the run went well. When I got home I had received an email from RunKeeper letting me know that in October I had run my furthest distance on record (I've only been using it for a few months). Ironically, the month's total distance was just about the distance of a marathon: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/fitnessReports/pr. I have a feeling that personal record will be changing often.

Day 006

Start: 11:00am
Weather: Cool and Clear
Time/Distance/Pace: 0:35:34 - 3.56 miles - 10:00
RunKeeper: N/A

Thoughts: Staying up until 1am drinking, getting up at 9am and going for a run at 11am without having eaten anything would typically have been a recipe for disaster. Yet, I set off with my older brother (who I'm try to convince to run the Sunday River Marathon with me) and one of my younger brothers (who is leaving for Tasmania in few days). It was a nice morning for a run, and we soon settled into a good rhythm that we kept for the whole run. Though I'm used to running alone, it was nice to run with my brothers. Unfortunately, soon after starting the run I pocketed my iPhone and when we completed the run it said we had gone 14 miles in 25 minutes at a pace of 2:14 per mile. I had to discard the RunKeeper event and estimate the time and distance.

Day 004

Start: 5:21am
Weather: Cool and Rainy
Time/Distance/Pace: 0:13:59 - 1.51 miles - 9:17

Thoughts: I started out stiff and my hands quickly became numb with the cool temperature and rain. I figured it would be a difficult run, even though I prefer running in the rain. Lately, (because of my knees) I make sure I have a day off between runs. My left knee bothered me yesterday from running Monday and Tuesday. But, within a quarter of a mile I had loosened up and felt quite good. On the return of my out-and-back run I started to think about a conversation I had with a fellow runner about the minimalist style of running. On a whim I shortened my stride, leaned forward slightly and concentrated on landing less on my heal and more on the middle of my foot. It seemed awkward and I certainly felt like I was working harder, but instantly my knee stopped hurting. Walking back to the house post-run I pondered whether the release of pain was psychological or that I've been hyper-extending my knee while running and shortening my stride prevented that. I don't necessarily want to be taken by the minimalist craze (though the theory behind it makes perfect sense to me) and with my limited knowledge in the subject and the fact that I'm training for a marathon, now is probably not the best time to be adjusting my gait. But, I think I will look into it more.

Tip: Seapoint Farms shelled edamame make a great ice pack. The edamame don't freeze together like most vegetables so they conform to the shape of your sore area. The packaging is tougher than typical frozen vegetable plastic. Also, they're almost guaranteed to not be eaten by your family.

Day 002

Start: 7:02pm
Weather: Clear, Cool and Breezy
Time/Distance/Pace: 0:28:54 - 3 miles - 9:38

Thoughts: After an alarm clock debacle (although I am OCD enough to check my alarm time three times, I failed to notice it was set for pm), I was forced to run this evening. I don't recall the last time I ran in the evening and was concerned about being out of my routine. Soon after starting I realized that I felt pretty good and started off at a fairly quick pace, for me. Since I was running at night, on a night that my wife was at tap class, I needed to check in on the kids with each loop (approximately 1 mile). After my first stop I realized how lucky I am to live in a rural area. Each stop killed my rhythm and increased my mile time. All I could think about as my son attempted to tell me about his Nintendo DS were the people jogging in place at intersections in the city, waiting for the crossing light to change. I could not run that way. Once I hit my pace, it's nonstop road thumping until the end.

Day 001

Before getting into the nitty-gritty I want to introduce this blog. As the title surely gives away, this is a marathon blog. Several times I have attempted to participate in a marathon, and several times I have failed before getting to the starting line. In early 2005 I began training for the Maine Marathon which would take place in October of that year. By May I had gotten to 20+ miles per week and started adding intervals in order to get more out of my workouts. I blew my knees and was unable to do the Marathon that year. Each attempt at training for a marathon after that resulted in extreme knee pain by the time I got to around 24 miles a week. In 2009 I was able to successfully train and complete a half-marathon in May and once again set my sight on the Maine Marathon. Once again I stopped my training due to knee pain.

This blog represents my latest attempt to train and complete a marathon. What is different this time (besides cataloging the attempt in blog-form) that will lead to success? Sheer determination perhaps. Most likely the knowledge that my body is slowly deteriorating and with each passing year the chance of success significantly decreases. Also, as I keep telling those who I try to convince to participate with me, it's just one day, just one run. If I can suffer through those 26.2 miles just one time then I can accomplish a life-long personal goal of mine and move on to the next without regret. Maybe that mentality will push my mind further than my body wants to go.

So, today marks day number one. The goal is the Sugarloaf Marathon. I chose this marathon because it is local and because it is one of the fastest marathons in the country, which to me translates as relatively easy on my knees. I've used my trusted source of marathon training info, Hal Higdon, to create my training calendar. Starting with the marathon's date and working backwards I inputted the Novice 1 Training and Spring Training schedules, which brought me to October 24, 2011. I know, people think I'm crazy to run through the winter, especially in Maine. With the right gear (STABILicers, Under Armor, and some biking gloves) it's not bad after a few minutes of warming up.

So, why a blog? Mostly for my own record keeping and inspiration to keep running. I hope that seeing how much time and distance I have put into my goal will make me hit the pavement (or snow drifts) on those early mornings when my knees ache and I just want to go back to bed. If a few people happen across it, that's cool. If you happen to be a marathon runner or training for your first marathon, that's even cooler. I'd love any input on what you're doing or have done to prep for your first marathon.

Start: 5:39am
Weather: Clear and Cool

Thoughts: It was a nearly pitch black morning with just a sliver of a moon peaking over the trees to the east. The temperature was near freezing as my lungs were tight but I was not wheezing (below freezing and I start to wheeze). Rounding the Harbor de Grace I anticipated the thud of a beaver slapping its tail off the surface of the marsh, as it startles me every time I run by. But, my pass was free of the mammal's warning. Upon reaching the top of the New Hill (Long Island's largest, rising 75 feet over the distance of a quarter mile) I was greeted by the constellation of Orion just above the trees directly in front of me. I tried to view it as some sort of omen for conquering my marathon but could not remember the myth surrounding Orion besides he is battling another constellation in the sky (hopefully the one that represents sore joints). Rounding the marsh on my return trip (still no beavers) my left knee began to throb. Just enough to remind me of its issues but not enough hinder my progress. The rest of the run was event-less, I had reached the one mile mark and fallen into the cadence of my pace, paying no mind to where my mind wandered.
