Weather: Clear and Cool
Time/Distance/Pace: 30:32 - 3 miles - 10:10
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/61486748

Thoughts: I had a decent run. It started out a bit sore but I picked up my pace the last half a mile or so. My body is still paying me back for slacking off over the holiday weekend. Even though my runs haven't been great, I'm actually looking forward to running again. I kind of wish that tomorrow wasn't a day off. Let's see how I feel in a month or two when the weekly distance starts getting up there.

Day 036

Start: 7:07am
Weather: Clear and Cool
Time/Distance/Pace: 21:24 - 2 miles - 10:41
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/61384465

Thoughts: I feel bad because I missed two runs over the Thanksgiving holiday. I brought my running stuff down to Boston with me and even got dressed for a run, but still failed to get out the door. Hal Higon says it's okay to miss a run once in a while, but never miss a long run (Saturday). Luckily, at this point my long runs aren't any longer than my other runs. Now I have to make sure I don't repeat that failure.

I was pretty sore from excessive dancing Saturday night and I didn't eat very well over the holiday break. So, my pace was slow, but otherwise the run went fine.

Day 030

Start: 5:13am
Weather: Cold and Clear
Time/Distance/Pace: 30:00 - 3 miles - 10:00
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/60738729

Thoughts: The first half-mile of today's run was probably the most effortless I've had so far. I felt as light on my feet as deer having learned that hunting season was cut short. It made me remember when I was marathon training in 2004 and up over 20 miles a week, those first three miles of a run felt like nothing. After that the cold kicked it, it was in the 20s, and labored breathing slowed my pace. But, for a few minutes I remembered why I love to run.

Day 029

Start: 5:07am
Weather: Cool, Breezy and Clear
Time/Distance/Pace: 20:52 - 2 miles - 10:26
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/60626182

Thoughts: Probably my hardest run so far. Yesterday and this morning I had a sore right hamstring and it definitely affected my pace. On top of that the cold and wind had my lungs sounding like a early summer bog full of peepers. Here's hoping that tomorrow's 3 miler goes better.

Day 027

Start: 7:03am
Weather: Cool, Breezy and Clear
Time/Distance/Pace: 39:04 - 4 miles - 9:46
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/60395277

Thoughts: The morning was cool and very windy, but there was a nice sunrise that made the morning worth it. The combination of cold and wind always affect my breathing and therefor my pace, but I was able to bring what was a 10 minute pace after the first mile down to a decent 9:46 pace. Hunting season is in full effect, I heard four gunshots during my run. Not the most settling sound to hear while you're out running.

Day 025

Start: 5:27am
Weather: Cool and clear
Time/Distance/Pace: 15:02 - 1.5 miles - 10:01
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/60200309

Thoughts: Woke up feeling like I had run a 10k yesterday. I spent the day volunteering for Portland Trails to blaze and harden parts of the Sebago to the Sea Trail (from the information kiosk to the Presumpscot River), which basically entailed pushing a wheelbarrow loaded with soil a quarter of a mile through the forest and bog. It definitely affected my pace, but I still felt good once I started running. I've gotten to the point where it feels more natural to run than walk. It only lasts for the first few miles at this point, but I still love that feeling.

Weather: Cool and clear
Time/Distance/Pace: 28:41 - 3 miles - 9:34
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/59968583

Thoughts: Woke up very sore from doing a core workout yesterday and was worried how it would affect my run. But once I hit the street I felt fine, better than fine actually. For the third time this month it was over 50 degrees out at 5am. Either from the core workout or from my balance workouts my running felt real sturdy and efficient. If I always feel that good, I will continue to work my core and support muscles. I'm thinking about adding stretching or yoga on Sunday to limber up. If I'm really going to do this I might as well go all out and get serious.

Start: 5:11am
Weather: Cool and clear
Time/Distance/Pace: 19:31 - 2 miles - 9:44
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/59846440

Thoughts: Ah, a different distance. It's not all that different; it's not like it's a longer distance. But, a new distance freshens things up. First of all, it means a different route. Living on an island has a whole bunch of benefits, diverse running routes is not one of them. I swear I have exhausted every possible way to run 1.5 miles and end up close to my house. A two mile run means that I can extend those there-and-back routes by a quarter mile. Secondly, it means that I am making progress; getting closer to my goal.

Considering that my left knee and my left hip hurt, and I always run on the left side of the road, I decided to run on the right side to see if that would relieve any pain. I also did Ab Ripper X and some balancing on one foot to try to strengthen muscles around my problem joints. I did feel better today than I have in the past, but Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning is when I'm typically most sore.

Day 020

Start: 6:47am
Weather: Cool, Breezy and Clear
Time/Distance/Pace: 29:50 - 3 miles - 9:57
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/59598218

Thoughts: One male mallard duck, two seagulls, one dog, one crow and two vehicles. That is all that I saw during my morning run around the island. It was clear and sunny and quiet. Again my left knee and hip bothered me before and after my run. I think it may be my iliobial-band. From a little bit of reading it sounds like the soreness comes from poor alignment caused by weak hips and weak feet (apparently knee issues are rarely caused by the knee, but from weakness surrounding the knee). For this and my runner's knee I'm going to try adding balancing on one foot, one-leg step-ups, one-legged squats, low-box step-ups and some core exercises. I will most likely do these on days that I do short runs. Hopefully the pain will go down as I strengthen my body.

Weather: Cool and Cloudy
Time/Distance/Pace: 14:34 - 1.5 miles - 9:42
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/59387403

Thoughts: I was behind schedule this morning so I only got a quick stretch in before heading out to run. Luckily it was only 1.5 mile run. For the last couple of days my left hip has been bothering me. This was the first time that it bothered me during a run. Hopefully with the day off before my Saturday run it will feel better.

Thoughts: I almost labeled this run as "Warm." It was fifty degrees out and felt almost like a cool summer evening. Along the front side of the island I ran through warm pockets in the air that I associate with summer nights. Even the beavers were out, startling the crap out of me as I ran by (five slaps of its tail, usually it only gets off two or three before I am out of sight). I felt great this morning despite waking up several times during the night with a leg ache (more specifically the back of my left knee including hamstring and upper calf). I found my groove early and kept my pace pretty consistent. I'm thinking it was either the warm weather or the fact that I drank so much water and didn't over eat yesterday. Either way, I woke up ready to roll.

Weather: Cool and Clear
Time/Distance/Pace: 14:29 - 1.5 miles - 9:39
RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/59009480

Thoughts: Two weeks down, twenty-eight to go. Overall I have felt fine. My left knees ache at times but not enough to concern me. My weight is dropping and at this time is low enough for the 10 miles per week. I plan on being in the low 190s when I get to 20+ miles a week and around 180 for the marathon. I'm using Livestrong's My Plate to track my calories and exercise. It's free to use and once you input your average activity level, weight and how you want to manage your weight (lose 2 pounds per week, 1 pound per week, or maintain weight) it gives you a calorie goal for the day (it also tracks fat, sodium, protein, carbohydrates, etc). I've been doing 1 pound per week and have pretty much been losing that.

RunKeeper: http://runkeeper.com/user/cadebro/activity/58763465

Thoughts: As I hit the road I had Conditions of My Parole stuck in my head, and it stayed with me for pretty much the entire run. My calf muscles were tight when I woke up, so I was afraid they would bother me, but once I got going they were fine. I noticed that my pace seems to be at the 9:15 mark now, where I was typically running a 10 minute miles before I began training. That is progress for me, because I am not worrying about my pace at all. I'm only concerned about not missing a run.

Thoughts: Upon leaving the house this morning I was welcomed by the sound of surge on the back shore of the island. I find the sound powerful and grounding. A reminder of the power of nature around me, not to mention the fact that I live on an island (which is hard to remember this time of year when you never see it in daylight). Setting off I tried to come up with a new way to run 1.5 miles. My favorite 1.5 mile run is through the conservation area, but with hunting season in full swing I avoid those 80 acres of the island. I wanted to tackle the New Hill again, for some reason I like running up it, but opt to loop around my neighborhood instead. Overall I felt pretty good and I kept the pace rather slow. I plan on using the Thursday run as a recovery run from the Monday/Tuesday runs and in preparation of the long Saturday run.

Thoughts: Not wanting to repeat yesterday's cold hands, today I juggled putting on gloves and managing RunKeeper. I was a little concerned that it would be a pain this winter, but I managed well enough. It will be a hassle if my shoe comes untied (just my right shoe, for some reason it always comes untied) but otherwise it won't be a big deal. My left knee throbbed all night long, but once I got moving this morning it felt fine. For some reason my gait felt all over the place though. Honestly, I mostly thought about NaNoWriMo starting today and how I'm going to get my hours of writing in on top of training for a marathon.
